Tso Moriri

Tso Moriri is one of the most beautiful high-altitude lakes in India, located in the remote Changthang region of Ladakh at an elevation of around 4,500 metres. It is the largest high-altitude lake entirely within India and is part of a protected Ramsar wetland reserve.

The most popular route is via Chumathang from Leh. Travelers should spend several days acclimatizing in Leh before visiting due to the high altitude.

Access and travel

The lake is reachable year-round from Leh via Upshi–Chumathang–Mahe Bridge (≈ 213 km, 7 hours).

Alternative summer routes cross Taglang La via Tso Kar or connect directly from Pangong Lake through Tsaga La Pass.

Because the area lies near the Indo-Tibetan border, visitors must secure Inner Line Permits (Indians) or Protected Area Permits (foreigners) in Leh .
